PECOS NEWS FOR WEDNESDAY.

Our doctor...Dr. Darpolar died of cancer this morning.
He's the guy who stitched up Gene's knee when we'd lived here less than 2 weeks.
We liked him when we met him in the E.R. and decided to make him our family doctor.
It's a shame...he was a good doctor...and leaves behind a wife and many children....the youngest being about 12 years old.
Pecos is already so short of doctors.
Now what are we gonna do?

I started painting the patio cover this morning.
It's going to take a looooong time.
We didn't want to paint it at all...but from our many sources...we have to.
And in west Texas you're sposed to put on 3 coats.

There sure is a bad tick problem here.
Folks who don't even have any pets have their yards full of ticks.
Gross.
I'm glad we don't have any....yet.
I'm diligent about putting flea and tick meds on our 4 pets every month.

The new bartender for the museum saloon isn't due until sometime in June...he's taking the really slow stagecoach ya know.
At least he should be trained by the time rodeo and the old timer's reunion is on the last weekend of June.
All this is tongue in cheek of course...it's a MANNEQUIN PEOPLE!

The Iraan I.S.D. is buying the education dept. at the T.Y.C. where Gene works.
There's alot of oil money in Iraan.
We hear that there will pay raises.
Gene will have to reapply for his current position.
That worries me...reminds me of what happened in Kyle.
"Oh, sorry Mr. Poole...you make too much money. We want a kid fresh out of college. See ya."

Last week his superintendent told him he wanted Gene to take a baseball team all the way to Vernon, Texas to play the T.Y.C. team there.
Jeez...that'd be an overnight trip.
Overtime.
Extra guards etc.
If that happens I'd worry about his safety.
It's a PRISON for Christ sake...KEEP THEM THERE!!
No telling what those idiot kids might try if you take them off the facility.

It was in the 30's here a couple of nights ago.
It's 94 today.

RADIO HOTLINE:
For Sale-
2,000 baseball cards.
wedding dress- $15. ( that must be some wedding dress.)

27 days until our vacation in Cozumel!

PATIO COVER PRETTY MUCH DONE.

The day started off chilly with drizzle. Pyote got rain...Odessa got rain...we did not.

WOW! There was just as much cussing today over the patio project as there was last time. That "see-ment" (or concrete) is just so damn HARD to drill!!! George cut his hand and it bled. Then George got a big hole in the ass of his jeans...poor Jorge!

Anyways they got the thing squared up and reinforced...chain removed...rope removed and see them enjoying the sunset.
Guess what the first decoration I put up was? If you are a Daniels type person....you'll recognize it!
There's one more board to add...but gene ran outta wood.
And I have ALOT more stuff to hang and add and decorate.
It's 9 p.m. and Gene went to bed already.
--------------------------------
RADIO HOTLINE:
For Sale:
Full size Elvis poster. (imagine...FULL sized!)
Wanted:
Dog kennels and doll houses. (everyone needs a house...actually there were TWO different people asking for doll houses on this day....what the hell's up with that?)
Chain link fencing for full or queen size bed. (huh? maybe they meant "and" not "for".)
-------------------------------
There was a puppy right here in town that tested positive for rabies. Yesterday they had a big rabies shot clinic at the local vet's.

The cops busted somebody with 350 lbs. of pot.

I went to the dentist in Kermit (population 5,700) last Thursday. It's 50 miles each way. No cavities...yay! The hygienist had a nice, light touch and the dentist was nice but durn....their equipment is SOOOOO outdated! I hadn't "spit in the bowl/sink" in years and years. Ah well, they got the job done. Pecos has one dentist but no one seems to like him...at least no one we know goes to him.
On the drive home a mama dog trotted right out in front of my truck....she was carrying a BIG, recently deceased ground squirrel in her mouth...it was just a-swinging back and forth.

It's going to be 40 degrees tonight. Jeez...60...40...90...80...whatever. We finally HAD to turn the A/C on last week. I HATE to do that. Seems like once ya turn it on...it never goes off.

I worked on Friday and finished the 67 or 72 or whatever it was denim shirts I've been monogramming.

Love, Mary

PECOS IS BLOOMING...I don't like them.

Got the table base at an estate sale in San Antonio a couple of weeks ago.
Gene cut plywood to fit and then I made a design.

I can't deny that there is SOME beauty in blooming desert plants....but I STILL just don't cotton to them. I don't want them in MY yard. I still miss our yard in Kyle and the San Marcos River House so VERY much!!

HAPPY 80th. BIRTHDAY SIB!! This is their grandaughter Erin carrying one of her presents from our house over to her house. We had a wonderful time meeting Sib and Bill's family and friends. This flower pot has birthday messages on each circle card in the pot.

HUMMINGBIRDS SHOULD BE CALLED "ZOOMERS".

There IS no other Pecos news except that we enjoy the birds every evening.
We see them in the morning too but at dusk is when they get super duper zoomie.
Click on the pictures and make 'em big.
Blue-the-Parakeet was here the other day...hadn't seen him in over a month.
All the other wild birds are having sex and building nests.

I rode my bike to work today.

We hope to finish the patio cover this weekend.

Our water, garbage, sewage bill is getting too big and the backyard looks crappy no matter how much we water it.

I want to change my name.
The two new ones that I heard are: Aunt Willie Maud and Aunt Lillie Lou...in the same family.

HUMMINGBIRDS ARE COOL!!!

We have 3 feeders now. One is hanging off the edge of the porch roof. They come close to feed and aren't too shy.
I'm going to try to get them to hand feed and have been reading about it on line. Gene and I were sitting out on the front porch this evening and there at least 6 hummingbirds zooming all around us...it makes us laugh and they make neat little noises.
Hand feeding would be SO exciting!! Stay tuned.

Gene was in San Antonio from Tuesday until Friday. He saw his mom twice and she was very happy to have him visit. His seminars were dumb and boring as usual. He is glad to be home.

The city is doing alot of advertising on the radio and newspaper regarding rabies. Pecos hasn't had an outbreak like this in decades. People are trying to trap the hundreds of feral cats....and we seem to have alot of skunks. Rabies clinics are being set up for pets...cats-n-dogs.

The continuing saga of stupid junkies:
I think there are alot of crack-heads and meth lab idiots around here.
CRIMESTOPPERS WORKS! At least it did this time. There have been 3 arrests made in the Needleworks burglary. We have recovered a portion of the $5,000. in merchandise that was stolen.
Another Crimestoppers search is for somebody who stole 200 PS3 and Wii games from Movie Gallery...it wasn't a break in.
Last Sunday night somebody tried to break into the museum!!! They broke the window in the front of the saloon but couldn't get in...so they took the time and trouble to climb up on the balcony out front and broke a window there but still couldn't get in. The museum has an alarm but unless the building is actually entered it won't go off.
So the burglars went across the street and broke into Brownlee Hardware and stole stuff and made a big mess. Poor Mr. Brownlee! That store has been there for over 100 years!

The swallows are here....they must've known Gene was out of town. I bet that they had nests on our front porch for years and years until Gene chased them off. They were flying in and out and all around the porch...but then went elsewhere. Spring is really here!

RADIO HOTLINE:
For Sale-
safety equipment or will trade for chickens or goats. (these people don't want to be safe... they want livestock.)
30 electric motors from one quarter horsepower to one horsepower.

PATIO COVER COMING ALONG FINE.

This is what went on today.
I accidentally erased yesterday's pictures.
George spent the night since he lives in Pyote.
Alonzo lives here and came over yesterday and today.
There's still alot to do but it's looking good....yes?
The whole thing is a little shaky still and needs to be squared up.
Hope a big wind doesn't come by before we get it done.

GENE'S BIRTHDAY & A NEW PROJECT.

I'm pretty proud of the chocolate cream pie that I made Gene for his birthday. It's a recipe I used to make him when we were first married and almost never make anymore.
He was very happy with it.
George and Alonzo came over and we grilled steak.
Then they finished drilling holes...see paragraph #3.

The wind kicked up last night about 8p.m.
It's been a steady blow for the last 24 hrs. of 40 mph with gusts to 60.
I HATE it and so do the dogs.
It can really get on your nerves after awhile.
San Angelo (about 3 hrs. from here) had a possible tornado and golf ball sized hail...lots of wind damage.
I did see a 15' tree uprooted here in Pecos.
Gene had on shorts at work today and said that the blowing dirt was stinging his legs.
Everybody's hair is a mess, our eyeglasses are never clean and it can ruin the paint on your car.
The air just FILLED with dirt...it's SO gross!

The night before last Alonzo came over and he showed Gene how to drill holes in cement. We are building a cover for our patio in the backyard so we can have some shade. Let me tell ya it was slow going....you can see in the pictures it got dark on them. Each hole was taking 35 to 45 minutes. We were going to have 10 poles to hold up the roof...I thought from the beginning that it was ridiculous idea...the space is only 10' by 14'. Before the drilling ever began we decided on 8 poles...then as the drilling progressed we settled on 6 poles...haha...it was such hard work everyone agreed 6 poles would do fine.
So...lots of cursing and we've hardly started.
The picture of Gene taken from the rear is amusing, no?

Friday George will come over and begin putting the poles in and framing the roof part. He used to be a roofer and Alonzo knows how to do pretty much everything.
While Gene is out of town next week I'll start painting the poles and frame work.
THAT'LL keep me busy for awhile!
Then we're going to top it off with that wavy, corrugated metal stuff...like what is on our carport roof.
Will it hold up 60 mph winds? It better!

Ya know if we had some acreage I'd have some goats and a few sheep and a donkey to watch over them all. Goat cheese anyone?

TWO different people called the Radio Hotline wanting clothesline poles? Did the wind blow theirs away? Gee, not many folks use clotheslines anymore.

Needleworks news:
That's where I work in case you are new to my blog.

When the store was burglarized about 10 days ago a high school kid called to ask if his letterman jacket was stolen....I had to laugh. We are monogramming the kid's name across the back. He must hold the jacket in high regard and probably worked hard to get it.

The incident was advertised on the local Crimestoppers and a reward was offered.
When I worked on Monday the police sargent came by and asked to step outside to see if some clothes he had belonged to us....they sure enough did! Later that day 2 houses in town were raided and some of our stuff was recovered.

The new Texas flag and American flag that I bought Peggy (from Dixie Flag Co. in San Antonio) arrived and they are just jim dandy! Peggy was very happy and I am proud now to put out our flags.

Peggy goes to Alpine every Tuesday to the Needleworks there. She called me from there on Tues.. and said "pull every size 11 shoe that we have and hold it back for the Alpine store for next week." I was amused...not many ladies wear size 11...she said the customer was 7'2"!!

Recent monogramming:
J&J Trucking, the local EMS, Terazas Restaurant and Home Healthcare Hospice. Next I'll be working on shirts for the sheriff's Dept.
Thank God we have this side thing for Peggy to fall back on when business is slow!

My vacuum cleaner quit which is a catastrophe if you've seen how much caprpet we have and know how anal I am about vacuuming...and the pets are shedding. The durn ting is not even 2 years old!

On that note....I'll say goodnight.
MDP
P.S...we found nothing in the hidden room. An old rotting rug, alot of dirt and a hole in the roof that needs repairing.

EDITED! COME TRIPPIN' W/ ME TO SAN ANTONIO....& Pecos Etc.

ANONYMOUS "G" just sent me a message regarding Blue the parakeet...who are you "G"?
Please sign your names when commenting....when I try to reply to these "anonynous" messages they are sent back to me...always....so please sign your name.

Unless you are a Daniels or a Woodruff, photo #8 won't mean much to you.
RE: 208 Elizabeth Dr....all they left was General Woodruff's pecan tree.
I saw at least 15 homes for sale on their street.
Everybody's yard is so beautiful with flower beds and green grass.

I went to the Ft. Sam cemetery and put flowers at Mom & Dad's and Gran & Woody's grave. It had been at least a year since I'd been there and I was so glad to go. Their graves are in a convenient to find and park nearby spot....BUT...no matter when I've gone there over the years....there is ALWAYS a service going on or about to begin and either I can't get there because of cars...or am asked to move my vehicle unless I want to be penned in for an hour. Plus there's always the hearing of "TAPS" and guns being shot off...which always makes me cry...but it's all O.K....that's just part of Ft. Sam cemetery.

It was nice to see Brook and sister Jane her husband Michael were in San Marcos visiting Toby...so I got to see them also. And I went to see my mother in law.

I LOVE to go to Brackenridge Park and Sunken Gardens!!! It reminds me of picnics there with Gran and Woody when I was a kid. And I used to cut school as a teenager and hang out at Sunken Gardens and at night and on weekends.
My pictures of Kiddie Park on Broadway didn't turn out very well so I didn't post them. It's seen it's better days...but hey it's been there since 1925...so what do you expect???? It's soooo cool that it's STILL open!!

I drove all around Alamo Heights and the outside of Ft. Sam....I.E.: Funston, Army, Post, Pine, Grayson & Pershing Streets....past the old horseback riding stables... & the long gone Playland Park...looks like they are tearing down the Officer's Club.
Where the S.A. Botanical Gardens are located now...is right behind the post near where out house is on Graham Rd...we used to ride bikes there...we called it "Snake Hill".

And right near the botanical gardens there was a little store called "Henry's"...we'd ride bikes there everyday to buy candy....it's a VFW hall now.

Ate lunch at La Fonda.
Found a great estate sale and bought cool stuff.

THE DRIVE THERE & BACK:
Saw lots of evidence of many grass fires.
A few bluebonnets...pretty disappointing...but many other kinds of wildflowers...not the hopeful...usual "blankets" of them. The yuccas were blooming nicely.

Saw a wild turkey and 2 teenage sized deer with white spots.
I get fed up with that drive the last hour or two...doesn't matter whether I'm coming or going...it's loooooong.

Funny things in Fredericksburg:
Cranky Franky's Bar-B-Q...now that name isn't something that makes me wanna eat there.
A street called Schmidtzinsky...GREAT name!
Closer to home:
P.U.! Oil field gas stinks.
Saw 2 cowboys leanin' against their pick ups...evidently chewin' the fat..and hey...it's spring round up time...thus one of them had a flatbed hooked up behind his truck and it had a tiny helicopter on it!

Stopped at two different diners to eat....ya know the rolling of silverware is a lost art....don't get me started on my waitressing years.
Saw a "Pecos Eagles" school bus about 2 hours from home...wonder where they were going?

PECOS NEWS:
The store where I work...Needleworks, was burglarized last Sunday night...stupid JUNKIES!! It could've been worse, but I felt SO bad for my boss Peggy. She works SO hard just keeping the place open in this sad little town.

The hummingbirds are here! They arrived about a week ago and we enjoy watching them so much!

RADIO HOTLINE:
Found: a white rabbit.
Wanted: Property w/ burned structure. (Huh?)

THE FOLLOWING IS MY FAVORITE ALL TIME HOTLINE REMARK!!!!!!!-----
Found: a white dog in a pink dress.
(Saw Ruth the animal rescue lady yesterday....the dog got out...the owner was found. He dresses up his dog yet doesn't put a dog tag on the collar so we'll know who it belongs to??? DUMB-ASS!!

And the skies are not cloudy all day....here in Pecos.
Thanks for reading my blog.
Love, mary
