Ya know...it's alot of damn WORK getting ready to go on"Vacay".

This is Soooooo funny.
I called Vivaaerobus yesterday to confirm out flight reservation.
Of course was on hold....the music I listened to was....instrumental.....soft rock....THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS!!!!!

I have a correction to make...just like in the regular newspapers.
May 18th was the 1 year mark of my knee ACCIDENT...not my surgery.
Whatever...who cares about that....my knee is fixed...that's all that matters.

RADIO HOTLINE:
For Sale-

COLOR GOES ON THE PATIO ROOF & THE MUSEUM SAYS 'BYE' TO JO.

So...the color is going up on the inside of the patio cover. The cool thing is that the colors are reflecting off the silver roof...we like!
Weather is heating up...will need to paint early in the a.m. from now on.
Forecast:
Mon.-101
Tues.-104
Wed.-103

This lady Jo is leaving her job at museum. That's she and her husband in the photo. She retired from teaching 3 years ago...took one week off and then started working at the museum. She lives in Barstow...4 miles to the East. Her husband is very ill so she needs to be home with him now. She's a very interesting person to talk to. They grow asparagus. It doesn't even make them any money any more...but everyone looks forward to it and loves it so much...they just keep a-growin' it. She's the person who told me the story about that lady who was addicted to buying hats. The museum just won't be the same without JO!

The museum bookstore and saloon are looking very good. They painted and lemon oiled everything. We have a special Elmer Kelton rack in the bookstore. The longhorn steer took the place of a falling apart moosehead. They were always sweeping up pieces of the moose's nose that kept falling apart. Pancho the bartender misses his moose friend.

Gene leaves tomorrow for Corpus Christi (for work) and will return late friday night. Then we leave for San Marcos/Kyle/Austin on Sunday and then fly out of Austin to Mexico on Tues. the 27th.

I'm excited to work the Old Timer's Reunion this Rodeo...it's the last weekend in June. The reunion is Wed. morning right before the parade. Then we are having OPEN HOUSE here that afternoon....see if we get any old timer's to tour our casa and hear some good stories...although from 2 till 5p.m. IS their nap time.

RADIO HOTLINE:
Note...people sell TONS of tires out here...what's that all about?
And baby bouncers...huh...i'm puzzled.
I guess wheels gotta turn and babies gotta bounce.
For Sale-
1955 Chevy Bellaire Station Wagon. It runs.
Give-
4 Guppies, 10 weeks old.

That's all kids.

MEET BILL & SIB HIGGINBOTHAM.

These are our neighbors Bill and Sib.
I go visit them once a week and we tell each other stories and laugh alot.
The pictures were taken at Sib's 80th birthday party a few weeks ago.
They are retired farmers.
I love them.

May 12th marked our 2nd year of living here.
May 18th will be the 1 year mark of my knee surgery.

Hummingbird myth:
They feed with their bill...like drinking from a straw.
Fact:
They drink sugar water with their tongue....at a rate of 14 licks per second.

We had a tiny bit of rain last night.
I don't think it was even measurable.
I always look at the weather radar online and see lots of storms nearby but not on us.
When Pecos people go traveling, if they see rainclouds...they detour and head TOWARDS them...just to experience rain and drive thru moisture...haha.

We have started using canvas shopping bags when we go to Walmart.
Some of the cashiers there are so stupid.
They keep looking for a bar code on the bag and try to ring it up....duh.
I have to explain what it is and what it's for.
Yesterday my cashier said "Oh, you bought your reusable bag. I don't see but a couple of folks with those." I answered "It's just me and my husband probably."
She replied "Actually the only other person I've seen use one is a man."
I said "Yeah. It's my husband."
They had a durn GIVEAWAY at Walmart a month ago of these bags....and no one uses them.
Stupid.
It's the least we can do for our Mother Earth.

That's all.

LIFE IS SLOW IN PECOS.

You don't see a "leaner" very often when playing horseshoes.
Somebody got one last Saturday night.
Out here everybody plays "washers"...so if Gene can convince someone to play horseshoes...it's a big deal.
We had a couple of rookies over....one was a natural...his brother was not.

These concrete guys are my new friends.
They weigh a TON and Gene and I had a hard time lifting them into place on the see-ment wall.
We put them there since we have no see-ment pond.
They don't talk much.
I got them at an estate sale.
I talked myself out of going to the auction last Saturday...no wagon wheel for me.

We will be VERY glad when our patio is done and we can hang up decorations...ya know...bottlecap snakes and twinkly lights etc.
It's going to be like a mullet haircut...which is of course....business in the front and party in the back.
Our patio is going to be business on the sides and party inside.
We are going to leave the posts natural.
The sides are white as you can see.
Then we are going to paint the 2x4 cross beams inside (on the ceiling) tropical colors...purple, turquoise and coral.

We went to the Pecos Social Lodge again last Friday...it was hoppin'!
They ran out of steaks!
Glad we got there early.
There were about 50 folks there.
We put in our application to join.

I was eavesdropping on my boss Peggy yesterday as she was calling 'ol cowboys inviting them to the old timer's reunion and the cowboy hall of fame induction...it's during rodeo...the last weekend of June.
I'll go and listen to everybody meeting and greeting and reminisce-ing.
We lose many of them every year.

I cannot get computer ink here. Walmart used to have my kind but doesn't anymore. I HATE to drive 70 miles each way to get it...crappus.

I just ordered (online) a couple of underwater flashlights.
We are going to try a night snorkel.
Gene and I leave from Austin for Cozumel on the 27th. Actually we land in Cancun and then will take a bus south to Playa Del Carmen and stay there for 2 nights...then take the ferry over to Cozumel for 4 or 5 nights. We havn't done the "bag drag" in 15 years but the difference in airfare was just too irresistible. We got round trip tickets for $150. each...into Cozumel they were double that.

Sigh...time moves pretty slow out here.
I guess that's all the news.
At least I'm pretty sure that I have both brothers checking in regularly...and Dan and Carolynn and Vilma and Jamey check in when they can.
I gotcha hooked...hahaha.
THANKS FOR CONTINUING TO READ MY COUNTRY, DESERT DRIVEL!!

Love, mary

A DOUBLE MURDER IN PECOS.

Sometime between the hours of 10 p.m. tuesday and 4 p.m. wednesday somebody stabbed to death a couple that own a beer joint here. The place is called D.J.'s and is about 10 blocks from our house. Rick just had his 50th birthday last week and his wife A.J. was 48 years old. Their son found them wednesday afternoon (in the business) after being unable to contact them all day.
We didn't know them but everyone else did and this awful crime is all anyone is talking about here. The suspect is a man from Pecos who spent the last 17 years in jail. He stole their truck and I heard today that they found the truck in Round Rock, Texas.
It's just really ,really sad...the unspeakable things that people do to one another.
Rick and A.J. were decent, hard working people who surely didn't deserve this...the whole town is very upset!
They are going to missed for a long time.

Dr. Darpolar's funeral is tomorrow. He died 12 days ago leaving behind six children. He lived here for 14 years and delivered 1,000 babies. That was his specialty but hundreds of folks went to him for every reason...including us. They have been holding up the funeral so that family members can get here from Liberia, West Africa...where he was from.
His wife and children will continue to call Pecos their home.
He is going to be missed for a long time.

Pecos has had only A HALF INCH OF RAIN so far this year!!!!

The local newspaper is beginning to feature a couple of Pets Of The Week....soooo cool and a good idea.
They are cats-n- dogs rescued by Ruth of course.

We are going to the Pecos Social Lodge again tonight for steak and libations.
We are going to join...dues are $75. per couple per year.
Maybe I'll make a few new friends.

RADIO HOTLINE:
For Sale-
22 goats $40. each.
Wanted-

Speaking of flea markets...I've just about decided not to go to the auction in Odessa that I've been looking forward to for so long. My funds are low...but I SURE DO WANT THIS WAGON WHEEL!!! Anyone? anyone? Should I go? Just how high is the bidding going to get on this here wagon wheel?

NOTHING MUCH.

I saw a lizard like this yesterday at work...except mine had stripes on his back.
He was running around a sandy area right outside the back door and then tried to come inside. Oy...Lucy would've freaked out...she's very afraid of lizards and geckos of any kind. It seems that the lizards lose the color of blue as they grow older.

Wind gusts today of 55 mph...sigh...it's getting old folks.

The beer joint in Pyote called Aunt Jackie's had it's yearly benefit last Saturday. We didn't go but donated a bottlecap snake and they auctioned it off. It fetched $48.!!

Twenty seven percent of Pecos' population is below the poverty line.

Gene saw a lady in the grocery store who looked familiar. They kept looking at each other. Turns out it was Rosie...they worked together at Gary Job Corps and we hadn't seen her in over 20 years. We had dinner with her and her husband last Friday night at the Pecos Social Lodge. The lodge is members only and looks like a dump...but the steaks were good. We've been meaning to go there ever since we moved here.

Radio Hotline:
Boring...no entries today.

That's all.
